The brilliant optical properties of Dichroic Glass are the result of multiple micro-layers of metal oxides.
NASA developed dichroic glass for use in space. Multiple ultra-thin layers of different metals (gold, silver, titanium, chromium, aluminum, zirconium, etc.) are applied to the surface of the glass, then kiln fired in a vacuum.
I cut different colored pieces of glass, assemble like a mosaic and top with clear glass and fuse again in the kiln at 1500F. The metal floats, giving them a 3-D look and the convex shape of the clear glass magnifies the piece.
After the glass has cooled I grind a groove around the edge,then wire wrap each piece,making them more secure than glue on findings.
My late husband, Darrell Wilks could hear trees, with his gift he selected wood for the Martin guitar company.
In 2004 a tree fell in a wind storm and Darrell recognized the potential of the tree. He climbed up the hill, hit the trunk with a rock and a tone rose, that’s nice. The tone fell, that’s very nice! The tone rose a second time, and that’s as good as it gets.
He spent two weeks getting it off the hill and had me send it out and it came back confirmed…Concert Grade Tone Wood.
We’ve sent the wood around the country, into the hands of very talented luthiers, all of them dulcimer makers.

Each piece is approximately a half inch by an inch and come hung on a silk cord.
These can be wired to hang either way, you decided.
